KIPP Capital High School – Public Art by Kiara Johnson
KIPP Capital High School opened it’s doors for the first time in Summer 2025 with public art painted by Kiara Johnson, and other local muralists.
Formal Mural Biography: The mural seeks to connect KIPP’s diverse student body from around the Capital Region, and encourage school pride for young scholars. I wanted to highlight each of the schools individuality without compromising the unity in KIPP’s academic culture. The making of the mural began with sketching ideas that emphasize community, and followed with rendering the illustration by adding detail for context. I hope the mural will inspire young scholars to take on exciting challenges with the reliable support of KIPP’s resources and staff.
Hired to paint the new school mural called “Unity in KIPP” through the Albany Barn as a Resident Artist.
Artist-In-Residence at Bethlehem Middle School
Selected to paint the new school mural and lead 8th grade middle school students from the accelerated art classes to execute a collaborative mural project. Over the course of a few weeks, Kiara Johnson leads 30+ students in hands-on workshop to produce their new school mural. Students applied knowledge reviewed in their classes like color theory, values, and color mixing to successfully paint the mural.
