Things to look for in a Live Painter

Live Painters come in different mediums and canvas sizes, but all must go through significant training to perform the most popular service: Classic Canvas Painting

NEW Live Event Painters does not equal NEW to painting.

Event painters with under 5 events of experience does not mean they are terrible painters. A lot of seasoned painters transition into the live painting industry to seek more traditional work. It’s important to look for overall skill and detail to discipline. To book the best of the best for your event, check out the tips below!

Tip 1. Have the Live Event Painter walk you through their process for Event Day

Any vendor should have their own services completely thought-out, and effectively communicate why it’s run a certain way.

If you are concerned about an artists’ process, don’t hesitate to ask them direct questions like, “What would you do if we couldn’t place you near electricity?” or “It’s an inside wedding, are your paints toxic?”. Involve yourself in the process as much as possible to alleviate any concerns you have leading up to the big day.

Most vendors understand that throwing any party is stressful, and the Live Event Painters who have back-up scenarios just in case something goes wrong are the artists you should hire.

Tip 2. Make sure Live Event Painters have insurance…please

All vendors should have insurance in place. Inquire if the vendor is able to work at your venue and in the state with proper insurance activated. Most artists include this information in their contract.

You do not want to be stuck in the situation where your live painter cannot perform because the Venue turned them away!

Tip 3. Local Live Event Painter or fly the artists out?

Tight budget? Clients looking for a painter on a budget should stay focused in their immediate or nearby city to avoid extra traveling costs.

However, many hosts and event coordinators find painters with a credible reputation and an amazing portfolio states away. If you find trust in service worthy of paying more, fly out your painter!

Tip 4. Not sure? Pay painters for an art test!

Inquiring with an artist, but unsure of their event painting portfolio? Consider investing in an art test!

Art tests are a popular way to evaluate if a painter with an amazing painting background BUT unrelated to event painting can still be hired for an event.

For ethical reasons, artists must be compensated for taking the time and using their materials for providing a test for evaluation.

Pricing can range from $250 to $500 depending on your ask. For painters who claim the painting will be finished by the end of the event, their art test should require only 4-6 hours of work. For painters who claim to finish the painting in studio, the art test should require 10-12 hours, and cost a bit more.

Tip 5. Ask the painter for Testimonials!

It’s important to know who has hired the painter before and what they had to say! Look for reviews directly from the artist or search the web. Reliable artists have testimonials available for public viewing.

How much does a Live Painter cost?

Hiring a Live Event Painter can cost a pretty dime! Costs depends on several variables like years of experience, cost of materials, travel cost, and style. Paintings that are less rendered in acrylics typically cost less than fully airbrushed rendered paintings usually produced in oil paints.

Where can you find Live Painters?

Live Painters are everywhere, and yet it can be hard to find us! Many people use search engines like Google, Yelp, and communities on Facebook Groups to find reputable painters. I have found most of my business on Facebook Groups.

Google tends to spotlight painters with great SEO scores, but feel free to hit page 2 or 3 to find other painters that are just as good.
